You Cut What?

“The U.S. government has 15 different agencies overseeing food-safety laws, more than 20 separate programs to help the homeless and 80 programs for economic development.  These are a few of the findings in a massive study of overlapping and duplicative programs that cost taxpayers billions of dollars each year, according to the Government Accountability Office.

A report from the nonpartisan GAO, to be released compiles a list of redundant and potentially ineffective federal programs, and it could serve as a template for lawmakers in both parties as they move to cut federal spending and consolidate programs to reduce the deficit. Sen. Tom Coburn (R., Okla.), who pushed for the report, estimated it identifies between $100 billion and $200 billion in duplicative spending. The GAO didn’t put a specific figure on the spending overlap.”

The newly elected and “been there, done that” Republicans are trying to get $61 billion dollars cut from the budget?  The democrats want to argue about that and raise the debt ceiling?  Cutting less than 5% of last years $1.3 trillion dollar deficit just doesn’t seem like enough to me!  If Burger King and McDonalds top meal deal were priced the same as each other and B.King offered a whopping 10% discount – would that make a difference to you?  Then how do you feel about 4.6%?  Do republicans really need to be willing to whittle the 61 billion down in order to appease the democrats and not shut down the government?  Our dear Mr. Boehner needs to get his thinking up and we need to let all the newbies know that this is not what we sent them there to do!  I just can’t be pacified with this small rendering and made to feel like our leaders did a good job if they accomplish this so called negotiation.  Then again, I am only one man and there are a lot of people out there that will be appeased with this sleight of hand business as usual bartering of our overall well being. Don’t tell me its raining saltwater while you’re hosing me!

If the Republicans do prevail in this economic freak show, please don’t pat them on the back.  Should they get the warm and fuzzies over this and think that this could set the bar for what is expected of them, we’re in serious trouble as far as turnarounds are concerned.  Meanwhile, Bernanke and Geithner are having highballs and snickering about giving away more than $61B of your tax dollars to their friends and foreign banks.  Conservatives think they’re cutting spending and these two are cutting a rug…hehehehe  What the hell, this will barely be remembered by election day 2012.
